Oktay Sinanoğlu was born on February 25, 1935 in Bari Italy. However; his family returned to Turkey with the outbreakofWorldWarIIin1939.HeattendedTEDYenişehir High School in Ankara in 1953 and after graduating he won a scholarship for education of chemistry in the USA. In 1956 he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in Chemical Engineering with the highest rank. In only eight months, he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957 with the highest degree. In the following two years, he finished his doctorate at the University of California, Berkeley. He started working as associate professor at Yale University in 1960. He solved an unsolved mathematical theorem for 50 years. He was appointed professor of chemistry on July 1, 1963 at age of only 28 and became the youngest person who worked as professor in Yale’s 20th-century history. He was the first to win the Alexander von Humboldt’s Science Prize in 1973. He was also a two-time nominee for Nobel Prize in Chemistry. During his time at Yale, he served as a consultant to the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). He worked for better education, supported for purified language in Turkey and strived to form a conscious generation. He died at age 80 on April 19, 2015.
